Scholarship Opportunities 8.07

Kansas State University has the “K-State Civic Leadership Scholarship” competition designed to recognize youth with an outstanding record of community service and civic leadership.  Deadline to submit materials is Friday, December 14, 2007.  For more information you can go to:  www.k-state.edu/nss/civicleadership/

November 1st is the early priority date for seniors to submit their scholarship applications for premier scholarships to KSU.

February 1st is the selective admission deadline for programs in the College of Architecture, planning & Design and interior design in the College of Human Ecology.  Your application fee, transcript and ACT or SAT score must be sent to the K-State Office of Admissions no later than February 1, 2008.

Pittsburg State University offers Academic achievement Awards based on your cumulative high school GPA and your ACT score.  They also offer grants, loans and employment assistance.  Their Senior Day is Saturday, September 29, 2007.  The registration deadline is September 24, 2007.  “Rumble in the Jungle” for seniors is Saturday, November 10th.  The registration deadline for that is November 5th.  There is a $10.00 registration fee and $5.00 for each additional guest for both of these events.  Contact the Pitt State Office of Admissions for more information at 1-800-854-7488 (PITT) or visit them online at www.pittstate.edu  Additional information is available in Mrs. Newell’s office, also.

These days will give you an opportunity to talk with professions and students; tour the campus, learn about admissions, housing, scholarships, financial aid, and KU traditions and history.  Lunch is provided.  Parents and guests are welcome.  Preregistration and a small fee are required for each program.  Registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis.  To register, go to www.admissions.ku.edu/seniordays, or pick up a form in the Guidance Office.

Priority deadline for KU scholarships is November 1st Freshmen who enter with a 3.25 GPA or higher and a 26 on the ACT and who submit a complete scholarship application by 11/1 will be guaranteed a nonrenewable offer of at least $1,000.

 

Scholarship Information 8.07 

Wendy’s High School Heisman

            After 13 years, Wendy’s Restaurants and the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee have created a different award.  This year, all students who meet the criteria may apply – as opposed to the prior method of selecting one male and one female from each high school.  Eligibility for application is limited exclusively to men and women entering their senior year of high school in the 2007-2008 academic year who have at least a “B” grade average and participate in at least one sport officially sanctioned by the National Federation of State High Schools.  If you have worked hard, are dedicated, and have become a role model for our underclassmen, please go online at www.wendysheisman.com for an online application.  Final deadline to apply is October 1, 2007.

Career Opportunities 8.07 

If you are interested in pursuing a career in Health Information Management, you may want to attend Washburn University or Hutchinson Community College for an associate’s degree in health information technology.  A bachelor’s degree in health information management is offered through the University of Kansas.   According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of HIM professionals is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2008.  A listing of of the numerous accredited HIM programs across the country can be obtained from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the national association of HIM professionals, at www.ahima.org/careers/ or by calling 312-233-1100.

Cowley Community Collegeis able to offer certificates and/or AAS degrees for medical coding, medical transcription and medical office support.  CCC partnered with Southwestern College to provide education in EMS Leadership, MICT, Coding and Transcription for bachelor’s degrees.  For more information, go online at www.cowley.edu

Job Outlook to 2014 

Rochester Institute of Technology has published a poster that provides career guidance information to students who are interested in exploring the relationship between career opportunities and college preparation.  It identifies career area, employment prospects and entry requirements for more than 95occupational titles requiring a college degree.  Check out Mr. McClanahan’s classroom window for this interesting guide.
