Scholarship Opportunities:
Bluestem Electric
Cooperative, Inc. has announced their scholarship
competition. Eligibility requirements include seniors whose
parents/guardians are members of Bluestem Electric Cooperative,
Inc. The scholarship application and the open-book test are due
December 14, 2007 @ 4:30 pm. The purpose of this scholarship
program is to support development of effective leaders through
educational opportunities. It will provide financial assistance to
make it possible for up to 6 high school graduates with cooperative
knowledge, scholastic merit & extra curricular achievements to
continue their education. Scholarship criteria is a 2-step
process:
1. a cooperative test point value = 140
personal resume’/application point value = 60
2. a personal interview point value = 600
All scholarships will be awarded upon total combined points from
step 1 & step 2.
NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award is for budding entrepreneurs or students with dreams of starting their own business. The $1,000 - $10,000 scholarships promote the importance of free enterprise and small business, and are not based on financial need. Awards go to students who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and initiative through examples such as: starting his/her own business; participating in organizations such as FBLA or FFA; or through other initiatives. An officially established business is not a requirement. Students are strongly encouraged to go to www.goonline.cc to apply online. Students may apply online beginning November 12, 2007 through February 11, 2008.
The NCRPC has updated the information for their youth writing/photography/video contest to encourage high school seniors to reflect on their rural community. They are offering cash awards of up to $1,000 for those deemed “winner” by the review panel. All the information and details are on the web site www.eyeonkansas.org. Click on the RuralVoices link at the upper right. About half way down on that page you’ll see a link to a flyer/poster that can be downloaded or printed. Deadline is March 1, 2008.
Best Teen Chef Competition is sponsored by the Art Institutes Culinary Arts college. The winner will receive a full-tuition scholarship to The Art Institute location of their choice. TEACH rants
are available for qualifying students who want to prepare to be
teachers. Because these grants are part of a federal mandatory
spending, funds will be available every year without going through
the annual appropriations process. Key features include:
• A $4,000 (for a total of $16,000) is available to undergraduates
who want to go into the teaching profession.
• Eligible students must have a 3.25 gpa or receive a score above
the 75th percentile on an admissions test.
• TEACH Grant recipients must teach in high need schools and high
need fields for a minimum of 4 years within the 8 years after
finishing the program.
• The following shortage fields are targeted for TEACH grants:
mathematics, science, foreign language, special education,
bilingual education, reading specialists, and other documented
high-need fields.
