Capital Projects for the 2007-08 School Year Approved

by Dave Roberts

Capital projects are those that are projected to cost over ten thousand dollars. Last spring the board met to identify and prioritize these capital projects.

The discussion has continued since that time. An architect has been retained to give the district the best advice on its options. Mr. Don Marrs of Salina met with the board during the early summer with options regarding the weight room.

Balancing budget reality against needs, the board has chosen to utilize existing space to solve the weight room needs. To do this, the library will be divided to make an additional classroom. The band room will become a classroom whenever the band is not using it. New furniture will be purchased to meet classroom needs. Doing these two modifications will enable special education and Spanish to move inside. Those rooms will become the new weight room. To do this, a wall will need to be removed.

In addition to the above, the board has given the superintendent direction to remodel the boys restroom at the middle school. The fixtures in the locker rooms at the middle school will also be included. The main home side football bleachers at the high school will be refurbished during  the spring of 2008.  A set of bleachers like the ones at the high school can be a very costly item to replace, so we are looking at refurbishing and maintaining what we have.

The projects listed here will be paid for out of our capital outlay fund with no anticipated increase in the mill levy. Capital outlay is a special fund that is maintained for projects such as roofing, technology purchases, and infrastructure needs.
