College Information:

Hays Academy of Hair Design would like for you to know that careers in the beauty industry are both professionally and financially rewarding.  90% of salons in the country are looking to expand their staff and hire more professionals.  The number of salon positions continues to grow annually and statistics show that there are six job openings for every new licensee.  Check out Mrs. Newell’s bulletin board for the poster and postcards.  Their website is www.haysaca.com

K-State will be hosting the Inaugural USpeak Forum on Current Political and Social Issues.  Blue Key National Honor Society is proud to present the conference, which will be held March 3, 2008.  This is a brand new event and the first of its kind in Kansas.   To promote youth involvement, USpeak aims to give Kansas high school students the opportunity to express their viewpoints and interact with their peers in an open forum on the most important political and social issues affecting their daily lives.  The conference is intended for Juniors and seniors.  The deadline for registration is February 18, 2008.  USpeak applications can be printed off from the Blue Key website, available at www.k-state.edu/bluekey

The University of Kansas extends an invitation to students who have been admitted to KU for Fall 2008.  The Freshman Summer Institute (FSI) is a program that allows new students the opportunity to “try on” KU prior to their arrival in the fall.  Through the program, students will take 5 hours of KU credit, live in residence halls, and gain a better understanding of KU resources.  This summer the FSI session is June 15 – July 11.  There are a variety of 3-credit hour courses available through the program.  The application deadline is May 1, 2008.  You may apply online at www.advising.ku.edu/fsi or contact Diann at FSI@kul.edu or (785) 864-2834.

 

Scholarship Opportunities:

          Helping Hands Trust was established for the purpose of lending a hand to those students working toward higher education goals.  A grant of up to $1000 per year ($500 per semester) for no less than 12 credit hours per semester is available for undergraduate students.  Lesser amounts may be allowed for other schools.  No applicant will be considered if he or she has violated alcohol or drug laws.  Application deadline is February 21st.  Applications are in Mrs. Newell’s office.

4-H has several scholarships for its members.  Please remember to check the Kansas 4-H Journal for those scholarships.  Deadline for all 4-H scholarships is March 1st

North Central Kansas Catbacker Club Scholarship is for students who have been admitted at Kansas State University.  Application deadline is April 15th.   You may pick up application forms from Mrs. Newell.

Senator Robert J. Dole Public Service Scholarship Program 

          Up to 128 $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students who meet eligibility requirements.  They are:

        Enroll as a full-time undergraduate the Fall of 2008 at:

Ø     University of Kansas

Ø     Kansas State University

Ø     Pittsburg State University

Ø     Fort Hays State University

Ø     Wichita State University

Ø     Emporia State University

Ø     WashburnUniversity

        Have a minimum 3.0 gpa

        Are involved in a significant amount of volunteer community service projects of public service activities

The Kansas Association of Conservation Districts (KACD) is sponsoring a speech contest which is open to any high school student, grades 9 – 12.  The topic of this year’s speech contest is “The Power of Conservation.”  The first place winner at the State Contest will receive $500; 2nd place receives $250.  For more information, contact the Cloud County Conservation District at 1501 E. 7th Street, Concordia, or call (785) 243-1509.
