American Legion Scholarships

AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIPS

 

DUE JANUARY 5, 2010:

 

National High School Oratorical Contest

            Eligible participants must be citizens of the United States and under the age of 20 and enrolled in high school or junior high.

            The subject to be used for the Prepared Oration in the Oratorical Contest must be on some phase of the Constitution of the United States which will give emphasis to the attendant duties and obligations of a citizen to our government.  The same subject and oration used in the Department Contest must be used in the National Contest.  For more details, contact Mrs. Newell.

            State winners receive a maximum of $1,500.  National finalists can receive up to $18,000.  For more details, contact Mrs. Newell.

 

DUE FEBRUARY 15, 2010:

 

Music Committee Scholarship

            This $1,000 scholarship is available to al students who have distinguished themselves in the field of music and/or who will major or minor in music at an approved Kansas junior college, college or university.

 

Shooting Sports Scholarship

            An outright grant of $500 will go to students who have participated in an American Legion Shooting Sports program in the State and Regional levels.  The applicant must be an average or better student scholastically.

 

Hobble (LPN) Nursing Scholarship

            This is an outright grant of $300 at the start of the 1st semester of after acceptance and verification of enrollment in a school which awards a diploma for LPN.  The applicant must have attained the age of 18 prior to taking the Kansas State Board Examination.

 

DUE MARCH 1, 2010:

 

Eagle Scout of the Year

            $10,000 will be awarded to the Eagle Scout who is selected “The American Legion Scout of the Year.” 

 

DUE JULY 15, 2010:

 

Dr. “Click” Cowger Baseball Scholarship

            This $500 scholarship is awarded to a Kansas who has participated in American Legion Baseball.  The scholarship is paid directly to the school at the beginning of the semester in which the recipient enrolls.

 

American Legion Baseball Leadership

            This $500 scholarship is awarded per state by National Headquarters to an American Legion certified baseball player whose name appears on American Legion Baseball’s Form #1 that has been filed with National Headquarters.

 

Paul Flaherty Athletic Scholarship

            This $250 scholarship is awarded to a high school boy or girl who has participated in school athletics.

The following scholarship are available to high school seniors, college level freshmen or sophomores who are in need of educational assistance, and are enrolled or intend to enroll in an approved junior college, college, university, or trade school located in the state of Kansas.  The applicant must be the son or daughter of a veteran; the parent(s) must have been a member of the Kansas American Legion and/or Legion Auxiliary for the past 3 years.  The sons or daughters of deceased members in either organization are also eligible if the parent’s dues were paid up at the time of death.  The applicant must be an average or better student scholastically, and must show a high school transcript with grade point average.

 

DUE FEBRUARY 15:

 

Hugh A. Smith Scholarship Fund

            This is an outright grant of $500 to be paid at the start of the Fall semester.

 

Ted and Nora Anderson Scholarships

            Four $500 scholarships.

 

Albert M. Lappin Scholarship

            An outright grant of $1,000.

 

Rosedale Post 346 Scholarships

            Two scholarships of $1,500 each.

 

Charles W. & Annette Hill Scholarship

            An outright grant of $1,000.  The applicant must have at least a 3.0 gpa on a 4.0 scholarship system.  Consideration should be given to those applicants desiring to engage in the field of Science, Engineering, of Business Administration.

 

U.S. “Udie” Grant Scholarships

            One $500 scholarship.

            The American Legion National Headquarters furnishes this booklet, containing over $2,000,000,000 in scholarships and educational information, to schools and libraries for the benefit of assisting any student who needs help furthering their education.  The book is updated annually and contains hundreds of scholarships, grants, and occupational opportunities available to high school seniors and college level freshmen & sophomores.

            There is a copy of this booklet in Mrs. Newell’s office.
