The 2011 Clifton-Clyde Eagle Football Team Never Backed Down

You have all heard the saying, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but rather the size of the fight in the dog”.  Well, that saying fit this year’s team perfectly.   Week in and week out we faced teams with more experience, bigger and faster players, but the one thing they didn’t have was more heart.  There were a lot of games this season that could have went either way for the Eagles, but our “will” to win was stronger than our opponents.  The Eagles finished with an impressive 7-2 record, a record that shocked almost everyone except our players.  Going into this season I knew what our strengths were going to be.  We had a “lunchbox” mentality, we were athletic, and we had confidence.  I also knew our limitations.  We lacked the size that we had grown accustomed to having.  I also knew many of our players lacked any real varsity experience.   With that in mind I thought back over the last 11 years and I realized two things.  One, tradition is hard to break.  And two,  the “will” to win is hard to defeat.  Clifton-Clyde and this group of young men have both and that’s why they were able to put together another successful season.
The coaching staff and I would like to thank all of the fans that supported us at home and on the road.  The team also greatly appreciated the parents that prepared our pregame meals and game day breakfasts.  The boys love them!  I would also like to thank Condray Farms and Randy and Marly Jackson for donating the hog for our “Pigskin Raffle” and Tailgaiters for the donation of the steaks at out Football Potluck.  Thank you to all of the alumni, fans and families that order items from our Eagle Gear sales and purchase hog raffle tickets.  All proceeds go directly back into our school district’s football and weightlifting program.  Without your support we would not be able to purchase many of the items we have over the last 11 years.
In closing, I want to thank the families of our players for being so supportive.  Being part of our football team is a huge commitment.  This group of players was one of the most dedicated and hard working groups I have had the privilege of coaching.  You can be proud of your sons for the examples they set and how they represented our school, our football program, and your families.  I am excited for next year and I know the expectations will once again be very high.  Remember you can keep up with the team at www.usd224.com or you can “Like” us on Facebook at Clifton-Clyde Eagle Football.

Congratulations to Reed Bergstrom and the #2 Nationally Ranked Butler County Grizzlies on their 2011 Citizens Bank Bowl Championship and Region IV Championship!

Memorial Trees Planted for Hoesli and Bergstrom

Sunday, September 4 the Eagle Football team surrounded by fellow football players, friends, classmates and family members of Shane Hoesli and Keenan Bergstrom planted two trees in memory of the former Clifton-Clyde Eagle Football Players.  Shane's tree is located near the South East corner near the players watering station.  Keenan's tree was planted in the North East corner near the entrance.  I would like to thank everyone that contributed to this day.  Next time you are up at the High School stop in and take a look at these beautiful trees.

Eagles Travel to Kenwood Cove for Team Building Trip

August 8, the Eagle Football Team traveled to Kenwood Cove Waterpark in Salina.  This annual team building trip gives the team a chance to unwind and have some fun after a busy summer.  The boys have been lifting hard since January and finished max outs last week.  This is their final week of freedom before Two-A-Days start next Monday, August 15. The Eagles will open the season on September 3 at home against the Linn Bulldogs.

Shane Hoesli Memorial Scoreboard

The new Eagle Football scoreboard is up!  It was donated by Robert and Colleen Hoesli in memory of their son, Shane Hoesli.  Shane was 2007 Clifton-Clyde graduate and a member of the Eagle Football Program.  Shane still holds the record for most tackles in a career and he  is also our career leader in passing yards and completions.  The Clifton-Clyde Eagle football program and USD #224 is very grateful for this wonderful gift.
